Donnie Darko

Teenage Symbolic Singularity.

A box-office casualty whose October 2001 theatrical release — weeks after 9/11, its imagery of a jet engine falling into a suburban bedroom suddenly unbearable — was effectively dead on arrival. It was resurrected almost entirely through midnight screenings and the early DVD market, becoming one of the defining cult reclamation arcs of the 2000s and a fixture of dorm-room iconography. The 2004 director's cut, which over-explained the time-travel mechanics through Roberta Sparrow's 'Philosophy of Time Travel,' is widely held to have damaged the film by resolving the ambiguity that fueled the obsession in the first place. Its mention landscape stays dense with theory-building — tangent universes, the Living Receiver, Frank the rabbit — and it persists as the model case for how a mystery withheld rather than answered is what generates a durable cult.
