Severance

We hope your time here will be a welcome reprieve from the problems of your personal life.

Severance arrived in 2022 as the most precise corporate-dread object the culture had produced since the pandemic reorganized how people relate to work. Its central conceit — a surgical procedure that cleaves an employee's work memories from their outside life — is so clean and so terrible that it lodged immediately. The show's production design, Ben Stiller's glacially patient direction, and the ensemble's commitment to deadpan dissociation produced a viewing experience that felt like being trapped inside a Kafka story that occasionally contained very good jokes. The discourse is dominated by theory, by the question of whether the 'outies' should feel guilt for their 'innies,' and by grief for what the series withholds. It is the rare genre work that turns workplace alienation into something that approaches the uncanny.

It's gorgeous and I respect it but the pace is a choice I'm not sure the story earns.
